Holos is part of the consortium of European companies and research centers that is responsible for the European Space Agency system which was implemented to monitor and predict the weather in space (“Space Weather”).

The system, entitled SEISOP – Space Environment Information System for Operations, went into operation this February, having been developed by a consortium that is composed by, in addition to Holos, Portuguese, Spanish and German companies, respectively: DEIMOS Engenharia, DEIMOS Space and INTA and VEGA, and the also Portuguese UNINOVA – Institute for Development of New Technologies, an entity of the National Scientific and Technological System for the OPS-HSC (a division of Advanced Mission Concepts and Technologies) of ESOC – European Space Operations Center.

The project began in October 2008 and it main objective was the development of an information system that allowed import, processing and analysis of data regarding the Space Weather, from terrestrial (scattered throughout the world) and space (satellites in orbit) sources of data that monitor parameters such as x-ray emission, neutron storms, etc.. aiming to develop predictive models that can anticipate the conditions for space weather and minimize risks to enable spacecraft and human crews.

The main modules of the system allow monitoring and analysis, forecasting, alarm definition, access data from multiple sources and reporting based on the obtained information.

Holos role was mainly the development of two key components: the “metadata” system, that allows the exchange of information between the various system modules, and system alarms definition, that monitors the system various parameters and triggers alarms when critical situations verify (either in recorded or forecasted data).

The system was delivered by ESA/ESOC to the Space Situation Awareness Program, which aims to supply toEurope, its citizens and satellite based services, information about the risks of space, including objects that orbit the Earth, the Space Weather and other threats coming from Space. SEISOP is thus a key component in this programs service.
